Choosing a BCD can be a difficult decision - hopefully our guide to choosing a Mares BCD will help you make your decision.

Mares BCD Buyers Guide
Choosing a BC is easier if you classify the options availableinto different categories:

  • Classic BC or with rear inflation
  • Integrated weight or non-integrated
  • Inflation and purge system

Choosing a BCD - How to Choose
What’s more, there are BCs specifically designed for women, and others that are very handy for travel because they are lightweight and slip easily into a suitcase.

Fans of the classic-style BC appreciate these models for their comfort, snug fit, and the availability of more pockets than BCs with a rear bag.

On the other hand, divers who prefer a rear bag appreciate the freedom of movement offered by positioning the bag behind the backpack.

Mares Dragon & Kaila
A combination of the two categories can be found in the Dragon and Kaila families (both available in the AT version). Bags on these models are built to combine the benefits of classic BCs with those of the rear bag. The result is maximum comfort, when diving and on the surface, along with additional lift capacity.

MRS Weight System
Many modern BCs are equipped with integrated weights, eliminating the need to use a separate weight belt. The detachable weight pockets, as with the MRS plus system and the Trim Weight, are versatile, and can be used with rigid or soft weights. The pocket can be removed with one easy movement.

Ergo Inflator Mechanism
In the inflation and purge system, in place of the traditional Ergo inflator mechanism, some models feature the exclusive Mares patented Airtrim system. This system uses pneumatic valves to simplify buoyancy regulation, since inflating and purging air can be done in any position, vertical or horizontal, in which the diver finds himself.

Women-Only BCD Models
Some BC models are specifically designed for the female market. The Mares She Dives line, with Kaila, Kaila AT, and Aliikai BCs, actually designed by female divers, offers a cut and fit dedicated to the female body, as well as interior comfort provided by soft plush.

Lightweight BCDs For Travelling
People who love to travel will surely appreciate the light weight of the Pegasus and the exclusive Quick-Pak, which allows divers to carry the Icon and Aliikai BCs easily in a suitcase, even in a carry-on bag.
